Whether it was Skittles themselves or a fan, making this spot into a GIF is perfect. The concept works just as well as a GIF. First an interactive TV spot is cool enough, but making it work on the web without video puts it over the top.

I’m a nostalgic sap. Ask any of my friends. I’ve kept journals since I was 13, I often look at my calendar to see what I was doing a year ago or two years ago and I love photojojo’s time capsule emails to send me photos of what I was doing a year ago.

My love of personal nostalgia makes me heart 4 Square and 7 Years Ago, a service that was built on Saturday at our foursquare hackathon. Sign up and everyday you’ll get an email reminding you what you did a year ago (assuming you checked into foursquare). It’s amazing how much you can forget. Plus, their icon is adorable.

Yelp is too much of a me-too product in a crowded category for a start-up - it’s just going to require too much marketing to get above the noise of the other social networking companies, and they won’t have the money or the uniqueness to help them out.

All of this is really starting to feel like 1998-99 where people put together plans around marketing concepts rather than around great products. Yelp, at the end of the day, is a solution in search of a problem. How often do I need references or have the time to plug in references? How many times am I going to give up my friend’s emails before they start getting annoyed? Getting silly again….

Beyond Insider Pages, Yelp is going to face competition from Judy’s Book, Craigslist, Friendster (desperate to find a real business model), Infospace, among others.
